Bank of Canada Rate Announcement July 15th

July 17, 2026

As anticipated, the Bank of Canada held its key interest rate at 2.25% this morning, July 15th, for the sixth consecutive time. This announcement directly affects borrowers with variable-rate mortgages and lines of credit, as their interest rates are tied to lenders' prime rates.

The bank says: "Governing Council will continue to assess the strength of the Canadian economy and the outlook for inflation, and is prepared to adjust monetary policy as needed."

🏦 What just happened?

  • The Bank is not rushing to raise or cut rates right now. They are still sitting in “wait and see” mode.
  • Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation CPI rose further to 3.2% in May, mainly because of higher gasoline prices linked to the war in the Middle East
  • As per the Bank of Canada, "Canada's economy is showing signs of improvement. Growth is picking up and inflation is projected to ease gradually from its recent spike. There are still important risks and uncertainties related to the war in the Middle East and US trade policy."

The Governor said, "They stand ready to respond as needed, and that the Bank is committed to maintaining Canadians' confidence in price stability through this period of global upheaval."

💡 How this affects you and your mortgage

Here’s how the decision flows down to you and your mortgage:

1️⃣ The Bank of Canada held the overnight rate at 2.25%. The Bank of Canada’s overnight rate is the interest rate that major financial institutions charge each other to borrow and lend money for one day (overnight), NOT the mortgage rate you get.

2️⃣ Bank prime rate
Because of the hold, most banks’ Prime Rate is staying put at 4.45%. Banks price their variable rates off of their Prime Rate (4.45%).

3️⃣ What this means for you

  • Variable-rate mortgage holders: No change to your rate or payment.
  • Line of credit (HELOC or unsecured): No change
  • Fixed-rate mortgage: No change (Fixed rates are priced off of bond yields, not the Bank of Canada overnight rate).

📅 Mortgage renewals (next 6–12 months)

  • Do not wait or auto-renew
  • Start your renewal early (ideally 6-12 months before your maturity date), locking in options now matters and can save you from rate increases.
  • 🏠 Home buyers: This is the calmer market many of you have been waiting for:
    More homes for sale
  • Less pressure and lower housing prices
  • Fewer bidding wars
  • More balanced financing conditions
  • Stable interest rates

🗓️ What’s next?

The next scheduled Bank of Canada rate announcement is September 2, 2026.

As of today, most experts continue to expect no change in the overnight rate in 2026 before it edges moderately higher in 2027.
